The new year means new adventures—and what better way to make the most of your time living (or visiting) Metro Manila than going on a road trip with family and/or friends? The cities in Metro Manila may have a lot to offer in terms of dining options and bonding activities, but there too is so much life beyond the toll gates waiting to be discovered. Besides, you can find something that will suit your fancy within an hour's drive. Consider these suggestions.
Nature adventure in Rizal
Adrenaline junkies that are also nature lovers will have a field day with the wide array of hiking options amidst lush greeneries in the province of Rizal, particularly in Tanay. Only around an hour and thirty minutes away from Manila, Rizal features everything from its famous flat-topped limestone cliff, Nagpatong Rock Formation, to the gorgeous Daranak and Batlag Falls, to the challenging Mt. Daraitan of the Sierra Madre Mountain Range which commences at the Tinipak River. Visitors will be treated to gorgeous panoramic views and fresh air at these popular eco-tourism spots.
History adventure in Bataan
With its crucial role in the revolt against the Spanish occupation in the country, Bataan never runs out of historical sites to check out and learn from. Aside from its many old churches, Bataan houses the Dambana ng Kagitingan (Shrine of Valor) on Mt. Samat and the Death March Markers, which documented the plight of the Filipinos as well as their heroism and love for country. Be transported back in time through the heritage houses in Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar. With Plaza Mayor de Ciudad de Balanga and Francisco Balagtas' Monument also worth the visit.
Food adventure in Tagaytay
Nestled on a ridge overlooking Taal Volcano and Lake is this cool and cozy town of Tagaytay about two hours south of the city. While most people living in Manila have already gone here because of its proximity, they still come back for the many unique experiences Tagaytay provides, most especially when it comes to gastronomic delights. While the bulalo, tawilis, and kapeng barako are the signature favorites and may be found at any eatery on the side of the road, don't miss these classic Tagaytay places in your itinerary: Bag of Beans, Sonya’s Garden, Balay Dako, and Antonio’s.
Happy road tripping and may you have an adventurous year ahead of you!
