DIY solutions for a fresher smelling home

Is your home smelling a way it shouldn’t? Here are five quick DIY tips from Chelsea Smith to help make your home smell absolutely phenomenal.

Scented candles and diffusers are great and all, but sometimes a DIY solution can already do wonders for you. Here are cost-effective solutions made up from everyday ingredients from your cupboard.


1. Homemade room and furniture deodorising spray

Here’s a homemade solution to make your home and furniture smell their best.

You will need:

  • Spray bottle

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • 2-3 drops essential oil
  • Water

Instructions:

  • Combine all ingredients together in a measuring jug and stir to combine.
  • Pour mixture into spray bottle and it’s ready to use.


2. Home freshener

A fresher recipe for a fresher house!

You will need:

  • A glass jar with a lid
  • Hammer to poke holes in the lid using a nail

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup baking soda
  • 4-6 drops essential oil

Instructions:

  • Combine all ingredients in a mixing jug and stir to combine.
  • Pour mixture into glass jar, securing with a lid.


3. Natural room diffuser

Here’s a natural room diffuser that’s easy to make!

You will need:

  • Small glass container with a small opening at the top
  • Wooden bamboo skewers

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon of isopropyl alcohol
  • 1/3 cup of almond oil
  • 15 drops of essential oils in the scent of your choice

Instructions:

  • Combine all ingredients together in a measuring jug and stir to combine.
  • Pour mixture into glass container.


4. Simmer pot air freshener

After hours of cooking, this scent will make the room smell so much nicer

You will need:

  • Pot
  • Stove top

Ingredients:

  • 2 small lemons
  • 2-3 sprigs of rosemary
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Water

Instructions:

  • Combine all items in a medium pot or a small pot.
  • Add water to fill about halfway.
  • Turn the burner on to low and let simmer.
  • Check the water level and add water as needed.
  • Remove from heat, leave to cool and let the mixture’s scent do its work to freshen up your home


5. Shoe deodorising spray

The smelly shoe scent does not belong in your home. Here’s a solution!

You will need:

  • Spray bottle

Ingredients:

  • 2 teaspoons of tea tree oil
  • 2 cups water

Instructions:

  • Combine all ingredients together in a measuring jug and stir to combine.
  • Pour mixture into spray bottle.
