With the hot climate of the Philippines, Filipinos are more than acquainted with the electric fan. It’s a staple in every Filipino home! But when you actually go out to buy one, a lot of thought goes into choosing the right fan. Keep reading and we’ll tell you the seven important things to consider when buying an electric fan!
1. At home, where will you use the fan?
When buying an electric fan, the vast number of choices at the appliance store can overwhelm anyone. To help you cross a few things out quicker, consider first where you intend to use the fan.
The size of the fan you should get depends entirely on the size of the room you’ll use it for. For example, a pedestal fan might be great for spacious rooms as it can help circulate air in large areas, but are quite ineffective in smaller rooms as they take up too much space.
2. How’s the fan’s portability?
If you intend to move your fan around a lot, it’s much better to purchase a fan that’s easy to move around. This automatically eliminates fans that are bigger and bulkier as they are much harder to transfer compared to smaller fans.
3. Do you have children or pets living with you?
The house can get rowdy when living with pets or kids. If you do live with kids or pets, this should be your cue to opt for models that are safer and less vulnerable to being knocked down.
It’s also a good idea to pick an electric fan that has grills that have smaller spaces in between them. A smaller space makes it harder for a child to put their fingers through the grills.
4. Consider your noise level
This is very important. For instance, if you intend to put a fan in your baby’s room, then it’s best to purchase a fan that doesn’t make loud noises that can disrupt your child’s sleep. If not that, you wouldn’t want a noisy fan in your living room to drown out the TV either.
5. Consider airflow and performance
A fan can oscillate, meaning it can move up and down or left and right, or it can face only one direction. Here’s a list of types of fans for your benefit:
Table Fans - Small and compact, suitable for cooling personal spaces
Pedestal Fans - Adjustable height for convenient operation, great for cooling rooms, and its oscillating head allows for more air distribution
Window fans - Bring in fresh air and draws out stale air, suitable for cooling areas where leaving an open window isn’t enough. It’s mounted on windows so it saves floor and table space
Wall Mount fans - Provides powerful air circulation and creates a comfortable environment in areas with limited floor space
Floor Fans - provides powerful airflow and ventilation at foot level, great for cooling homes and ideal when wall mount fans or ceiling fans isn’t feasible to do
Tower Fans - Its thin, vertical design allows it to fit into small, compact spaces. It’s quieter and less likely to fall over like a top-heavy pedestal fan, and great for cooling homes
Ceiling Fans - Helps make rooms significantly cooler by circulating airflow in a room
6. Durability
When buying a fan, you’d want to make the most of your money and buy a model that will last long and won’t break easily. Remember to go for a model with a solid and sturdy design.
7. How easy is the fan to clean?
A clean fan lasts longer, circulates cleaner air, and easier to maintain. Some fans require a lot of disassembling before cleaning, other fans only need a simple wipe. Better think about how willing you are to clean your fan!
