Filipino Artistry Conquered the Global Stage—Why Not Your Home Too?

2019/01/14

It has already been a month since the pageant but we still cannot stop talking about our new Miss Universe Catriona Gray and how well she represented the Philippines in all her activities, from her passion and drive for her advocacy down to the little details of her fashion choices. The ideal embodiment from beauty, brains, and heart, this model-singer stunned the world as she strut the runway and red carpet with utmost confidence and grace, donning Filipino-inspired ensembles she personally handpicked. Learning from our queen, we gathered some of her best looks and listed down tips on how to cop her style while dressing our homes.

Use indigenous materials
Catriona was fond of incorporating the T'nalak fabric—abaca cloth woven by the T’boli women, with intricate and creative patterns inspired by their dreams—in most of her outfits and she even went as far as Lake Sebu, South Cotabato not only to get these weaves but also to seek permission to use as well as consult on how to best use them. She also had clothing made from piña (fiber made from the leaves of a pineapple plant) silk and Inabel fabric (weave made out of cotton and other natural fibers by the Ilocano people). Just like Catriona, you too can make use of local materials in building and designing your own home. Aside from items accentuated by textiles, furniture made of bamboo or rattan and even panels or lamps made of capiz shells might be the perfect addition to your space.

Collaborate with local designers
Nothing screams Filipino pride more than working together with the brilliant minds of our kababayans (fellow Filipino). From wearing some Jearson Demavivas-made looks during the pre-pageant activities to parading Mak Tumang creations during the coronation night, Catriona was undeniably "Miss Philippines" wherever she went, showcasing our heritage with the help of homegrown talents. For your home, we highly suggest you avail of the services of architects and interior designers that would help turn your dream into reality. Maybe try Bobby Mañosa's team if you want that Filipino theme evident.

Incorporate historical and cultural elements
Be it hanging on your wall or sitting as a centerpiece on your table, artworks reflecting Filipino history and culture will always have room for your humble abode. Take cues from Catriona who has craftfully paid tribute to the folklore Ibong Adarna (a magical bird) and to the Mayon Volcano in her Miss Universe gowns (and, dare we say, lava walk?). Her "Three Stars and A Sun" gold ear cuff, considered as her lucky charm, was also greatly inspired by the country's flag while her LuzViMinda National Costume integrated native designs from different tribes in the country's major islands Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Some outfits had subtle hints too, like an embroidered jeepney or handpainted sampaguita flower and anahaw leaves. Your home may be needing that touch of Filipino to complete the look.*
